Meditation Makes One Happier

Research has found that there is an increase in brain activity associated with positive emotions during meditation. People who meditate tend to register more activity in the happy part of their brain which makes them feel more positive about their life. Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin was invited to give a talk on "meditation" at the National University of Singapore, Office of Estate and Development.

3rd AUN-QA Training Course for Accomplishing Programme Assessment

The 3rd “AUN-QA Training Course for Accomplishing Programme Assessment” was organised for members and non-AUN members by AUN Secretariat. The 4-day workshop was held from 4 - 7 December 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The 4-day course aims to introduce the AUN-QA system and enhance quality assurance practices. It is held for professionals who are in charge of quality assurance at programme and/or institutional level from universities inside and outside ASEAN.

The content of the workshop encompasses:

  • Introduction of quality assurance in higher education
  • AUN quality assessment process
  • Self-assessment at programme level
  • Study visit to Chulalongkorn University

The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin together with facilitators from the National University of Singapore. The workshop was attended by 35 participants from Brunei Darrusalam: Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, Indonesia: University, Bogor Agricultural University, Universitas Indonesia, Hasanuddin University, Universitas Mahendradatta,  Malaysia: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Philippines: Saint Louis University, Centro Escolar University, Thailand: Suranaree University of Technology, Srinakharinwirot University, King Mongkut's University of Technology, Chulalongkorn University, Naresuan University, Rajamangala University of Technology, Bangkok University, Vietnam: Hoasen University, and Yemen:  Ibb Univeresity.

Implementing the ASEAN Quality Assurance Framework in Myanmar

A seminar on "Implementing the ASEAN Quality Assurance Framework in Myanmar" was organised by the University of Yangon on 22 November 2012. The half-day seminar was attended by rectors, pro-rectors, vice-rectors and faculty members from the various universities in Myanmar. Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin was one of the two key speakers at the seminar. He shared with the audience on the "Trends in Educational Quality and Beyond". He spoke about the transformation of education in the 21st century and the development of international and regional quality assurance framework.



 

Enhancement of AUN-QA System Implementation in ASEAN Universities (2nd Workshop)


The second workshop on “Enhancement of AUN-QA System Implementation” for CLM countries was organised by ASEAN University Network, Yangon, Myanmar from 19 – 22 November 2012. 

The workshop was facilitated by Mr Johnson Ong Chee Bin and facilitators from the National University of Singapore. The workshop was attended by more than 30 participants and observers from University of Yangon, Yangon Institute of Economics, Myanmar Maritime UniversityMyanmar Mercantile Marine College, Civil Aviation Training Institute, Mandalay University,  and Cooperative University. 

The workshop was graced by Dr. Myo Myint, Deputy Minister for Education, Myanmar at the opening ceremony on 19 November 2012.

The workshop covered PDCA approach to quality assessment, desktop planning, site assessment, site tour, stakeholders' interviews and report writing.

The Great Service DNA

The Great Service DNA is a holistic approach for integrating and aligning an organisation’s culture and its people attitude to the customer experience that aims to create, attract and retain its customers for long term business sustainability. Organisations can transform their service from good to great by embracing the Great Service DNA which encompasses culture, attitude and service as illustrated below.
Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin presented the above model at the 7th ANQ Congress Tokyo 2009 in Japan.The paper was awarded as one of the outstanding oral papers presented.






The PROCESS Approach to Self-Assessment

Self-assessment is a comprehensive and systematic review of an organisation’s activities and performance against a chosen standard (like the ISO 9001/4, AUN-QA, SQA, etc.) or a set of criteria that is critical to the success of the organisation. The self-assessment should cover the key activities and performance indicators of the organisation’s business. It should be systematically carried out based on the process and system approach principles. The PROCESS approach is a 7-step process encompassing Purpose, Readiness, Organisation, Communication, Execution, Self-diagnosis and Sustenance as illustrated below.


The PROCESS Approach to Self-Assessment was presented by Johnson Ong Chee Bin at the "Sustaining Business Success through Quality Management Standards" Seminar at the Launch of SS ISO 9004 : 2009 in Singapore on 11 January 2010.

Quality Assurance and Applying the AUN Standards in UEH

Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin was invited as a key speaker at the Quality Assurance and Applying the AUN Standards Workshop at the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The workshop was held on 29 October 2012 at UEH and attended by about 100 faculty members. At the workshop, Johnson presented the following topics:

  • Application of the AUN Assessment Scheme
  • The Art of Drafting a Self-Assessment Report (SAR)
  • From Theory to Practice – Analysing the Formulation of Expected Learning Outcomes and the Course Matrix
  • Enhancing the SARs for External Assessment

ASEAN-QA Training Workshop III


The ASEAN-QA project on Quality Assurance is a capacity building initiative collaborated by DAAD, HRK, AQAN, AUN, SEAMEO-RIHED and ENQA .  The ASEAN-QA Training Workshop III was hosted by Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City from 22 - 26 October 2012 in Vietnam.


The 5-day training workshop focuses on preparation for external assessment, sharing of university's QA model and soft skills for QA officers.  At the workshop, Mr Johnson Ong Chee Bin, AUN-QA Expert (Singapore) facilitated the following sessions: 
  • The 5Ps Model for Programme Development
  • The Roles of QA Officer
  • Leading Effective Teams
  • Effective Communication Skills
  • Inter-personal Skills

The 5Ps Model


The 5Ps Model provides a roadmap for educational programme development.  It begins with the environmental scanning of external factors, an analysis of internal capabilities and resources of the university with the objective of determining the “Purpose” in satisfying stakeholders satisfaction and outcomes.

The teachers and learners are the “People” at the centre of the process. The teacher who is the content expert needs to consider the characteristics of the learners so that relevant programme and place can be created for effective teaching and learning.

The “Programme” needs to be developed with the “purpose” and “people” in mind. Learning outcomes, curriculum, teaching and learning strategies and assessment have to be constructively aligned for effective learning and the achievement of the learning outcomes.

The “Place” provides the relevant learning space (physical and virtual), learning environment (social and psychological) and learning resources (materials, technology, etc.) to facilitate effective teaching and learning.

The last P is “Process” which encompasses internal and external quality assurance, evaluation and feedback, benchmarking, continuous improvement and review.

The PDCA Approach to SAR Development

The second workshop for the PDCA Approach to SAR Development was held on 25 & 26 September 2012 at Universitas Indonesia (UI). The workshop was customised for UI with the objective of preparing the teaching staff as facilitators in developing Self Assessment Report (SAR) for their programmes.

At the end of the workshop, participants learn to:
• Apply the PDCA approach to SAR development;
• Interpret the AUN QA criteria at programme level;
• Apply the requirements of SAR;
• Use the technique for writing SAR; and
• Relate the AUN QA assessment process

The workshop was attended by 15 faculty members from various faculties in UI and it was facilitated by Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin, AUN-QA Expert.
