29th AUN-QA Workshop for Accomplishing Programme Assessment

The 29th AUN-QA Workshop for Accomplishing Programme Assessment was held in Bangkok, Thailand from 17 to 20 December 2018.

The 31/2-day workshop aims to introduce the AUN-QA framework and enhance quality assurance practices based on the 3rd version of the AUN-QA framework at programme level. The content of the workshop encompasses:

  • Quality assurance in higher education
  • AUN-QA framework and criteria at programme level
  • AUN-QA quality assessment process
  • PDCA Approach to self-assessment
  • Self-assessment report (SAR) writing
  • Change Management

The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin, AUN-QA Expert together with A/Prof. Tan Kay Chuan (NUS, Singapore) and Prof. Arnel Onesimo Uy. The workshop was attended by 36 participants from universities and institutions in Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

9th Assessor Training Workshop for AUN-QA Programme Assessment

The 9th Assessor Training Workshop for AUN-QA Programme Assessment was jointly organised by AUN-QA Network and Ho Chi Minh University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) from 6 to 12 December 2018 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The workshop was uniquely designed to give a "hyper-real" experience by incorporating both "simulated assessment environment" in the classroom and "live assessment" observation of the 127th AUN-QA Programme Assessment at HCMUTE.

The workshop aims to equip participants with the essential competences to carry out an AUN-QA programme assessment. The workshop aims to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate the competences to carry out AUN-QA programme assessment 
  • Relate the quality assurance of higher education in key ASEAN member states to AUN-QA programme assessment 
  • Formulate questions for AUN-QA programme assessment 
  • Apply the PDCA approach in AUN-QA programme assessment
  • Prepare an AUN-QA programme assessment 
  • Conduct a desktop assessment for a programme; 
  • Conduct a site assessment including stakeholders’ interviews, site tour and documentation review; and 
  • Write assessment feedback, presentation and report

The workshop was attended by 32 participants from universities in Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin, AUN-QA Expert together with Dr. Tan Kay Chuan from the National University of Singapore.

Uplifting Quality Assurance of Legal Education in Lao PDR

The LuxDev Project LAO/031 funded by Luxembourg Cooperation seeks to improve legal education and to enhance QA standards in supporting the continued development of higher legal education in Lao PDR. Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin, the founder and principal consultant of Education Quality International and AUN-QA expert is appointed as the Curriculum Development Specialist for the 5-year project ending 2022.

The first capacity building workshop on AUN-QA Programme Framework was held for the Faculty of Law for National University of Laos (NUOL) and Champasack University on 14 to 16 November and 28 to 30 November 2018 respectively.

The 3-day workshop aims to introduce the AUN-QA programme framework and its criteria and to enhance curriculum and quality assurance practices for its study programmes in in both NUOL and Champasack Unversity. A self-evaluation of the study programmes at various departments was carried out and concluded with recommendations to improve the existing quality of the curriculum and QA systems to meet AUN-QA programme criteria.

ASEAN-QA SQUARED - Workshop on OBE at NUOL

Under the ASEAN-QA SQUARED train-the-trainer programme, a workshop on "Outcomes-based Education (OBE) - A Reflection of Current and Prospective Programmes" was hosted by the National University of Laos (NUOL) from 26 to 28 November 2018, Vientiane Lao PDR.

The workshop learning outcomes are: 

  • Define the AUN-QA framework, National QA Framework for HEIs;
  • Describe OBE concept;
  • Apply Bloom’s taxonomy in formulating PLOs;
  • Explain PDCA approach to PLOs design;
  • Develop PLOs for their selected programme;
  • Create Curriculum Mapping

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Thanongsack Duangdala from the NUOL and Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin was one of three experts invited and he delivered the topic on "PDCA Approach to Formulate Learning Outcomes". 



37th Intake of Certified Quality Manager Course - Training and Development Module

The Certified Quality Manager (CQM) course is hosted by the Singapore Quality Institute (SQI) and Mr Johnson Ong Chee Bin is the appointed trainer for the Training and Development Module. The module for the 37th intake was held on 24 November 2018 at SQI. The module covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Training and Development
  • Training and Development Process
  • National Model for Training and Development
  • Factors affecting the Future of Training and Development

OBE Framework - Student Assessment

A 1-day workshop on OBE Framework - Student Assessment was held by Educational Quality International in Singapore on 12 November 2018. The workshop was designed and facilitated by Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin, Principal Consultant and Founder of Education Quality International and three participants from Andalas University, Indonesia attended the customised training.

The expected learning outcomes of the workshop are:

  • Explain the Integrated OBE framework and Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach to programme design, development, implementation and evaluation
  • Select and design student assessment rubrics and marking schemes to achieve learning outcomes
  • Apply the principles of continuous quality improvement (CQI) to student assessment in OBE





Applied Approach to Designing and Implementing OBE Framework in Myanmar

A 4-day OBE workshop "Applied Approach to Designing and Implementing Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) Framework" was hosted by Pyay Technological University from 6 to 9 November 2018. The workshop was jointly sponsored by Education Quality International (eqi) as part of its service community project for CLM countries in ASEAN, Pyay Technological University and AUN-QA Network.

The 4-day workshop was designed and facilitated by Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin, AUN-QA Expert and Ms Jenny Ngoc from VNU-HCM. The workshop aims to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Describe the characteristics of Education 4.0
  • Integrate OBE framework and Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach to curriculum design, development, implementation and evaluation
  • Select appropriate strategies to engage stakeholders in curriculum design
  • Apply the principle of constructive alignment to align stakeholders’ needs, curriculum, learning outcomes, teaching and learning, and student assessment
  • Apply revised Bloom’s Taxonomy in writing learning outcomes
  • Select appropriate instructional and assessment methods to achieve learning outcomes
  • Design student assessment rubrics and marking schemes to achieve learning outcomes
  • Evaluate the OBE curriculum for quality enhancement
  • Apply change management in implementing OBE

A total of 36 Participants from 10 universities in Pyay and outside Pyay attended the 4-day workshop.










EU-SHARE Conference: "Preparing for the Future: The Role of ASEAN Higher Education Framework in a Disruptive World"

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Office of Higher Education Commission (OHEC), the European Union (EU) to Thailand and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Regional Centre for Higher Education and Development (RIHED) jointly hosted the European Union Support to Higher Education in the ASEAN Region (SHARE) Regional Conference on Qualifications Frameworks (QF) and Quality Assurance (QA) from 29 to 31 October 2018 in Bangkok.

The conference was participated by about 200 participants from ministries and universities, experts on QF and QA, and students from both Europe and Southeast Asia. The conference was structured into three sections: (1) Taking stock of achievements in SHARE (2) Current state of the AQRF and AQAF, and (3) Planning for the future.

Applied Approach to Designing and Implementing OBE Framework at Thu Dau Mot University

A 4-day OBE workshop "Applied Approach to Designing and Implementing Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) Framework" was held at Thu Dau Mot University from 16 to 19 October 2018.

The 4-day workshop was designed and facilitated by Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin, Founder & Principal Consultant of Education Quality International and Ms Jenny Ngoc from VNU-HCM. The workshop aims to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Describe the characteristics of Education 4.0

The workshop was uniquely designed to give a "hyper-real" experience by incorporating both "simulated assessment environment" in the classroom and "live assessment" observation of the 121st AUN-QA Programme Assessment at Mahidol University.

The workshop aims to equip participants with the essential competences to carry out an AUN-QA programme assessment. The workshop aims to achieve the following learning outcomes:
  • Demonstrate the competences to carry out AUN-QA programme assessment 
  • Relate the quality assurance of higher education in key ASEAN member states to AUN-QA programme assessment 
  • Formulate questions for AUN-QA programme assessment 
  • Apply the PDCA approach in AUN-QA programme assessment
  • Prepare an AUN-QA programme assessment
